Artist Statement

I love to wander. I always want to know where a street leads and what’s behind a building. My paintings capture these hidden views and those at the edge of where we consciously direct our attention. The many layers of the urban landscape never stop offering me subject matter. I take a lot of pictures.

A photo is the start of every painting. After all the wandering, I wander through all the photos, gathering what has potential. There may only be one among dozens. What am I looking for? Light and shadow are at the heart of my work and the transformative effect of sunlight on a brick building or a traffic cone is what inspires me to paint.

I experiment digitally with the photos, adjusting the composition until I generate a dynamic tension that sparks an emotional reaction in me. Once I commit to a scene, my visual approach is graphic—sharp forms, strong colors, and high contrast. I paint methodically, slowly building thin layers of acrylic paint to achieve a smooth, satisfying surface.

Every wander reveals something new and each painting surprises me. My hope is to surprise the viewer too.
